Dog and cat age calculator

The multiply-by-seven rule is wrong: the first year counts as about 15 human years, and large dogs age faster than small ones. The calculation below uses size-specific curves.

The life stage matters more than the number: from senior age onwards, yearly check-ups become half-yearly and blood work becomes routine. The figures are indicative. For a real care plan, talk to the vet who knows the animal.

Frequently asked questions

Why do large dogs age faster?

They grow more in the same time, and the higher rate of cell division shortens lifespan. A Great Dane is senior at 6, a chihuahua only at 10.

Do indoor cats live longer?

Considerably longer. An indoor cat often reaches 15–18 years, an outdoor one averages far less, because of accidents and infectious disease.
