Air Bud Returns to the Court and Our Childhood Hearts Weren't Ready

The Return That Caught Us Off Guard

Air Bud’s return to the basketball court emotionally caught us off guard, even though many of us hoped certain childhood films would remain locked in their memory boxes, far from critical analysis of our visual tastes or old VHS collections. This title doesn’t count among those that can be ignored. The moment a Golden Retriever steps onto the court, it feels like everyone suddenly reverts to age eight. The new character, Buddy, was officially introduced in the first teaser for „Air Bud Returns,” and yes, the basketball is present. The scene includes a child, a Golden Retriever, and that sudden realization that nearly three decades have passed since the original film’s theatrical release. Personally, I believe mentioning this chronological detail wasn’t necessary to amplify the nostalgia’s impact.

The Story Follows Jacob and His Discovery

The new feature film follows Jacob, a 14-year-old teenager, who moves with his mother into his late father’s childhood home in Fernfield. While sorting through his belongings, Jacob discovers an old VHS tape labeled „Air Bud.” This detail feels like a targeted hit aimed at anyone who fondly remembers physically owning this film on magnetic video tape. Then comes the crucial part of the plot: Jacob meets Buddy, a Golden Retriever who plays basketball. The teaser quickly brings us back to the atmosphere that made the original premise so adorably devoid of seriousness. Buddy has a basketball. He has a hoop. He has absolutely no logical justification for being this good at the sport, and yet, here we are again, facing this situation.

A Satisfying End to the Search for a New Buddy

This also feels like a fairly satisfying conclusion to the search for a new Buddy. Back in 2025, Golden Retrievers were already participating in auditions for the role in „Air Bud,” yielding varied athletic results. Some of them may have been better suited for the important role of boosting team morale. However, this new Buddy arrived perfectly prepared. Two real dogs, named Charlie and Summer, share the lead role, selected after a nationwide canine talent search. Even better, director Robert Vince stated that the production chose real dogs over replacing the character with CGI or artificial intelligence. So when we watch a Golden Retriever running across the court, we know there’s a very good boy, in the canine sense, behind the performance. Given that a Golden Retriever already takes his filming duties for „Air Buddies” very seriously, we can assume the canine fan base will be present at screenings.

Release Date and Emotional Core

The film „Air Bud Returns” is scheduled to hit theaters on January 22, 2027. The story seems to know exactly who it’s speaking to in order to strike emotional chords. Jacob and Buddy eventually join an underdog team and pursue a basketball championship, but a deeper thread runs beneath the surface action. Jacob mourns the loss of his father, and discovering his father’s VHS tape becomes the link between the original film and the new narrative. This means we’re not just asked to watch another dog play basketball. We’re invited to follow a child who finds his deceased father’s VHS copy of a film many of us watched in childhood, meets his own Buddy, and begins everything anew. Very well. Perfectly normal. No emotions involved here.

The Premise Remains Gloriously Unchanged

After nearly three decades, the premise remains gloriously unchanged in essence: A Golden Retriever sees a basketball. A Golden Retriever plays basketball. People don’t question it. And frankly, why should we? There’s still no rule stating a dog can’t play basketball.
