Sage’s journey began with a heartbreaking ordeal. As a tiny kitten, she was discovered by the side of a road, likely the victim of a car accident. A veterinarian initially planned to euthanize her due to the severity of her injuries, but a compassionate rescuer intervened. For years, this person provided dedicated care and affection. Eventually, worsening personal circumstances forced the rescuer to surrender Sage to the California sanctuary to ensure she received lifelong specialized attention.

Retired Firefighter Reunited with Lost Dogs During Live InterviewDue to her hind-limb paralysis, Sage requires a rigorous daily routine. She wears specialized floral diapers, eats a tailored diet, and takes supplements to stay clean and comfortable. However, the most critical part of her healing process involved time and patience. When she arrived at Milo's Sanctuary in her carrier, she looked out with guarded caution, bracing herself for the worst.
In her early months, progress came through tiny, hard-earned victories. Sage gradually formed deep bonds, starting with shelter manager Mirissa and later extending to several resident cats, including a black-and-white feline companion she frequently spends time with.
Her paralysis never slows her down. Wearing her patterned diaper, Sage scoots autonomously from room to room, exploring every inch of the sanctuary with boundless curiosity. Once she satisfies her adventurous spirit, she curls up on a soft bed for a peaceful, carefree snooze, completely at ease.
Finding Her Voice and Her True Self
The most remarkable change in Sage is the discovery of her voice. As Mirissa told LoveMeow, she has learned to speak up. When Sage dislikes something, she firmly lets the staff and other cats know. She is no longer shy about expressing her opinions.
When receiving the right chin scratch, that same voice transforms into a gentle chirp of pure joy. For a cat who once kept everyone at arm's length, accepting affection from strangers is a monumental milestone. Mealtime is another area where she has completely let her guard down, happily allowing caregivers to assist her and sitting patiently by her raised bowl.
Perhaps her greatest gesture of trust involves her favorite catnip toy. Mirissa notes that Sage now gladly shares it with visitors, sliding the toy toward guests as a warm invitation.
The fearful cat who first entered the sanctuary is entirely gone. Today, Sage cruises the hallways like she owns the place, chirps when she is happy, and sleeps soundly on her back without a single care in the world.
