Rescuers Find Injured Puppy Near Pond and Rush to Provide Medical Care

A Good Samaritan Refuses to Leave Her Behind

The woman who responded to the report initially hoped the story about an abandoned puppy was not true. Instead, upon arrival, she found the animal’s condition far worse than expected. Although someone had retrieved Pretzel from the water, she had been left in the junkyard without essential medical care. The woman contacted ThisIsHouston Rescue, which promptly agreed to take the puppy into its care. Karlin Medlin, the medical coordinator of the organization, later explained to The Dodo that Pretzel’s background remained a mystery. The dog’s overall appearance suggested she had been struggling for some time, but no one could determine exactly how she ended up in the pond.

Within hours, Pretzel was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic. The rescue team could finally begin systematically addressing her injuries and weakness, which had made the situation so critical. At the clinic, veterinarians discovered that Pretzel’s wounds were deeply infected. She was also malnourished, requiring extremely careful management of her nutritional recovery. Wound treatment demanded thorough cleaning, and her feeding had to follow a strict, controlled plan. The puppy needed far more than a quick exam and a simple meal before she could begin genuine recovery from all she had endured.

Pretzel Faces a Difficult Road to Recovery

Despite her fragile state, Pretzel allowed the medical team to treat her. Medlin visited Pretzel at the emergency clinic and found a quiet, weakened animal who seemed to feel safe receiving gentle care. Medlin recalls that Pretzel responded positively to head pets and soft voices from those attending to her. Although still in shock, her willingness to accept help gave caregivers a chance to begin the difficult work ahead.

In the following days, Pretzel began showing encouraging signs of improvement. After receiving a blood transfusion, she became more alert and eventually started eating on her own. These developments were welcome news to the care team, but Pretzel still faced another major medical obstacle. One of her limbs was fractured and infected, and veterinarians determined amputation would be necessary.

Small Signs of Progress Offer Hope to Rescuers

The rescue team believed removing the damaged limb would contribute to Pretzel’s long-term well-being. Although the surgery would represent another challenging phase in her recovery, caregivers remained optimistic about her ability to adapt, given her young age as a favorable factor. For now, Pretzel remained under the careful supervision of the individuals who had taken her in. Her treatment focused on promoting healing, rebuilding strength, and ensuring comfort as she recuperated.

A Loving Home Awaits Her Somewhere in the Future

Pretzel’s rescuers have already begun thinking about the life they hope she will eventually live. Once she recovers sufficiently to leave their care, they intend to find a family that will provide her with the stability and affection she needs. Medlin expressed confidence in Pretzel’s future, stating the team will work to help her recover both physically and emotionally. Their immediate priority, however, was guiding her through the remaining medical challenges.

At the time her story was made public, Pretzel was eating independently and regaining some of her physical strength, with surgery for her injured limb still planned. She has not yet been adopted, but the team at ThisIsHouston Rescue remains committed to helping her reach the day she is ready for her own home.
