Rescued Feline Becomes Surrogate Mother to Nine Kittens
From Cruel Abandonment to Dedicated Motherhood
An abandoned mother cat discovered locked inside a pet carrier at an Atlanta park successfully raised her own five newborns and four foster orphans, totaling nine kittens. Rescuers named the resilient feline Jaga after she endured a heartless abandonment that left her and her helpless babies completely vulnerable in a public green space.
Animal welfare workers stepped in after a park visitor noticed the sealed carrier sitting unattended. Inside, Jaga showed no signs of aggression despite her traumatic ordeal, immediately focusing on nursing and protecting her tiny offspring until help arrived.
The initial rescue brought Jaga and her five days-old newborns into the care of local rescue volunteers. Workers ensured the young family received proper nutrition, medical checkups, and a safe indoor environment to begin their recovery.
Can Compassion Heal Past Trauma?
Jaga quickly adapted to domestic life and demonstrated remarkable patience with her caretakers. Her gentle demeanor made the transition smooth for both the mother and her fragile newborns.
Shortly after her own litter gained strength, the rescue network faced an unexpected crisis involving a separate group of abandoned newborn orphans. Without a mother to feed them, these vulnerable babies needed immediate intervention to survive their first weeks of life.
Rescuers introduced the orphaned kittens to Jaga, hoping she might accept them alongside her own brood. The devoted cat immediately embraced the newcomers, nursing and grooming them as if they belonged to her from birth.
