Homeless pregnant pitbull approaches strangers for help and gives birth to a litter named after breakfast foods

By Tom Harrison •

A desperate plea

A pregnant and homeless pit bull approached strangers without hesitation, desperately seeking help—a moment captured in a video that gained over one million views and generated more than twelve hundred dollars in donations for Hope for Paws.

Breed stigma and the need

Pit bulls are frequently victims of harsh stereotypes that are hard to overcome, which means many of these dogs require extra intervention from rescue organizations. When Hope for Paws received a call about a pregnant, abandoned pit bull in distress near a house, volunteers JoAnn Wiltz and Katie McKittrick responded instantly, without delay.

Unexpected trust from a frightened dog

The woman who reported the situation described the animal as alone, cold, and hungry, yet surprisingly showing unexpected hope in the face of the two rescuers. As soon as they arrived, the dog ran toward them without hesitation, as if understanding they had come to help. Her behavior—so open and trusting—suggested she may have had positive experiences with people in the past, allowing her to place trust in those who appeared out of nowhere.

Instincts proved correct

Her instincts did not fail her. The dog, whom they named Waffles, was far along in her pregnancy and on the verge of giving birth. JoAnn decided to take her home, offering a warm and safe place where she could deliver her puppies in peace. Just a few hours later, Waffles began to give birth—a moment of deep emotion and tenderness.

A breakfast-themed litter

Her puppies were named after breakfast items: Pancakes, Sausage, Beignet, Doughnut, Hashbrown, and Croissant—each name evoking the warmth and comfort of a hearty breakfast, just as Waffles cared for her pups. Watching her nurse, clean, and care for them with unwavering dedication, it is impossible not to feel a warmth in the heart—similar to the feeling brought by a cup of warm milk in the morning.

The importance of community support

This story could have had a very different ending if a compassionate neighbor had not reported it, if donations had not reached Hope for Paws, or if there were no kind people dedicated to animal protection causes. This is precisely why public support is vital: rescue organizations depend on contributions from everyone to give abandoned dogs like Waffles and her family a chance at life.

Volunteers express joy and hope

JoAnn and Katie expressed deep joy at being able to make a difference in the life of this pit bull family—a breed often misjudged, yet capable of showing extraordinary love and loyalty. The video capturing the rescue and birth of the puppies was posted on YouTube, where it quickly went viral, accumulating over one million views. Below the video, Hope for Paws added a donation link, and as of the time this article was written, the campaign had raised over twelve hundred dollars.
